Hebrew focus

Focus on sound-play, repeated roots, and contrasts. Verse references open the BLB Hebrew interlinear.

אָמַן ʾāman — be firm, reliable; believe / be established Isaiah 7:9
אוֹת ʾôt — sign Isaiah 7:11
עַלְמָה ʿalmâ — young woman Isaiah 7:14
עִמָּנוּ אֵל ʿImmānû ʾEl — God with us Isaiah 7:14
שְׁאָר יָשׁוּב Šĕʾār Yāšûb — a remnant shall return Isaiah 7:3
מַהֵר שָׁלָל חָשׁ בַּז Mahēr Šālāl Ḥāš Baz — hasten spoil, hurry plunder Isaiah 8:1
מִקְדָּשׁ miqdāš — sanctuary Isaiah 8:14
אֶבֶן נֶגֶף ʾeven negef — stone of stumbling Isaiah 8:14
תּוֹרָה tôrâ — instruction Isaiah 8:16
תְּעוּדָה tĕʿûdâ — testimony Isaiah 8:16

The wordplay in Isaiah 7:9

אִם לֹא תַאֲמִינוּ כִּי לֹא תֵאָמֵנוּ

ʾim lō taʾămînû kî lō tēʾāmēnû — roughly, “If you do not believe, you will not be established.” Both verbs come from the root אמן, linking faith with firmness/reliability.

Chapter 8 gives another sharp contrast: the Lord can be a sanctuary and also a stone of stumbling.

Prepare for Nov 19 — Isaiah 9
  1. Read the movement from darkness to light.
  2. Study the royal child titles in verse 6 as a unit, not only as isolated names.
  3. Ask how the chapter’s hope relates to the Assyrian crisis that surrounds it.
