Hebrew focus

Focus on sound-play, repeated roots, and contrasts. Verse references open the BLB Hebrew interlinear.

הַר har — mountain Isaiah 2:2
בַּיִת bayit — house Isaiah 2:2
תּוֹרָה tôrâ — instruction, teaching Isaiah 2:3
דָּבָר dābār — word Isaiah 2:3
חֶרֶב ḥerev — sword Isaiah 2:4
אוֹר ʾôr — light Isaiah 2:5
גָּבַהּ gābah — be high / exalted Isaiah 2:11
שָׁפֵל šāfēl — be low / humbled Isaiah 2:11

The chapter's vertical contrast

The mountain of the Lord is lifted up so the nations can come to instruction, while human pride is repeatedly brought low. Isaiah distinguishes divine exaltation from human self-exaltation.

Verse 4 makes another famous transformation: instruments of war become instruments of cultivation.

Prepare for Nov 5 — Isaiah 5
  1. Read the vineyard song (1–7) and the woes (8–30) as one chapter.
  2. Listen for the sound-play in verse 7, then mark the three moral inversions in verse 20.
  3. Ask how the vineyard’s failed fruit connects to the social sins named in the woes.
