Come, Follow Me alignment: October 12–18 covers Isaiah 58–66. This class takes Isaiah 64 as the close-reading chapter for that block.

Hebrew focus

Focus on sound-play, repeated roots, and contrasts. Verse references open the BLB Hebrew interlinear.

קָרַעְתָּ qāraʿtā — you tore / rent Isaiah 64:1
שָׁמַיִם šāmayim — heavens Isaiah 64:1
אֵשׁ ʾēš — fire Isaiah 64:2
מַיִם mayim — water Isaiah 64:2
פָּגַעְתָּ pāgaʿtā — you meet / encounter Isaiah 64:5
טָמֵא ṭāmēʾ — unclean Isaiah 64:6
צִדְקֹתֵינוּ ṣidqōtênû — our righteous deeds Isaiah 64:6
בֶּגֶד עִדִּים beged ʿiddîm — a garment of ritual impurity; KJV “filthy rags” Isaiah 64:6
חֹמֶר ḥōmer — clay Isaiah 64:8
יֹצְרֵנוּ yōṣĕrênû — our former / potter Isaiah 64:8

Images in tension

The chapter moves between overwhelming divine presence and human frailty: heavens / earth, fire / water, righteousness / uncleanness.

Verse 6 is stronger and more concrete in Hebrew than the familiar English phrase “filthy rags”: כְּבֶגֶד עִדִּים refers to a garment associated with ritual impurity.

Then verse 8 changes the relationship: אֲנַחְנוּ הַחֹמֶר וְאַתָּה יֹצְרֵנוּ — “we are the clay, and you are our former/potter.” The plea rests not merely on human failure but on belonging: “You are our Father.”

Prepare for Oct 22 — Isaiah 1
  1. Read the entire chapter as one argument.
  2. Mark the contrasts: know / not know; worship / injustice; scarlet / white; faithful city / harlot; silver / dross.
  3. Watch how judgment and purification lead back to Zion’s redemption.
