Come, Follow Me alignment: October 5–11 covers Isaiah 50–57. This class takes Isaiah 54 as the close-reading chapter for that block.

Hebrew focus

Focus on sound-play, repeated roots, and contrasts. Verse references open the BLB Hebrew interlinear.

רָנִּי rannî — sing / shout for joy Isaiah 54:1
עֲקָרָה ʿăqārāh — barren woman Isaiah 54:1
הַרְחִיבִי harḥîvî — enlarge Isaiah 54:2
בְּרֶגַע קָטֹן bĕregaʿ qāṭōn — for a small moment Isaiah 54:7
וּבְרַחֲמִים גְּדֹלִים ûvĕraḥămîm gĕdōlîm — with great compassion Isaiah 54:7
בְּשֶׁצֶף קֶצֶף bĕšeṣef qeṣef — shetzef–qetzef: a rhyming wrath phrase Isaiah 54:8
וּבְחֶסֶד עוֹלָם ûvĕḥesed ʿôlām — everlasting covenant-kindness Isaiah 54:8
יָמוּשׁ / תָמוּט yāmûš / tāmûṭ — depart / totter Isaiah 54:10
בְּרִית שְׁלוֹמִי bĕrît šĕlômî — my covenant of peace / wholeness Isaiah 54:10

The contrast Isaiah builds

בְּשֶׁצֶף קֶצֶף — shetzef–qetzef is deliberately striking in sound. Shetzef is rare and its nuance is debated; traditional readings include a small/brief outburst or a surge of wrath.

Isaiah immediately sets that fleeting anger against חֶסֶד עוֹלָם — ḥesed ʿolam, “everlasting covenant-kindness.” Verse 10 extends the contrast: mountains may depart and hills may totter, but the Lord's ḥesed will not depart and His covenant of shalom will not totter.

Prepare for Oct 15 — Isaiah 64
  1. Read Isaiah 64 as a communal prayer rather than as isolated proof texts.
  2. Mark the images of divine presence: heavens, mountains, fire, water.
  3. Then mark the human images: uncleanness, fading leaf, clay, potter, Father’s children.
